7 Days in The Gambia: A Perfect First-Timer’s Itinerary

Seven days is enough to transform your understanding of Africa. Not all of Africa — but this particular, remarkable sliver of it. The Gambia is compact enough to experience meaningfully in a week, and rich enough that you will leave with a mental list of reasons to return. This itinerary is designed for first-timers flying in from Europe, North America, or the Caribbean. Every accommodation, experience, and service can be paid with crypto through CryptoFarer.

📱 Before You Fly: The CryptoFarer Checklist

Day 1 — Arrival & Atlantic Orientation

Morning: Land at Banjul International

Flights from London, Amsterdam and Paris typically land in late morning or early afternoon. Your CryptoFarer airport transfer driver will be waiting in arrivals — booked in advance via WhatsApp, paid in crypto. The drive to the coastal resort area (Kololi, Kotu, Bijilo) takes approximately 40 minutes along the Atlantic Road.

Afternoon: Settle and Explore Your Beach

Check into your property. If you’ve booked one of CryptoFarer’s coastal properties, you’ll be within walking distance of the ocean. Spend your first afternoon decompressing. Walk the beach. Watch the fishing pirogues come in at Tanji or Kololi. The Atlantic here is dramatic — big waves, wide sand, very few people.

Evening: First Gambian Dinner

Head to a beach restaurant for grilled barracuda, thieboudienne, or benachin. Ask what’s freshest. Order bissap (hibiscus juice) or a cold Julbrew, The Gambia’s own beer. This first evening is for acclimatisation, not agenda. Sleep early.

Day 2 — Abuko Nature Reserve & Cultural Immersion

Morning: Abuko Nature Reserve

Depart by 7:30am to catch the reserve at its most active. Abuko is 25 minutes from the coast — your CryptoFarer driver can take you. Entry and guide are bookable through CryptoFarer Experiences. You’ll walk forest trails spotting monitor lizards, colobus and vervet monkeys, crocodiles in a reed-fringed pool, and a staggering diversity of birdlife. West African vultures, emerald kingfishers, sunbirds. Plan 2–3 hours minimum.

Afternoon: Bakau Fish Market & Kachikally

The Bakau fish market is one of the most photogenic scenes in The Gambia. Bright painted pirogues, women gutting and smoking fish, pelicans hovering overhead, the smell of salt and charcoal. After the market, visit Kachikally Crocodile Pool — sacred Nile crocodiles in a shaded enclosure, presided over by the Bojang family. You can touch a crocodile. Calmly. It’s an experience that makes no rational sense and which you will describe for years.

Evening: Senegambia Strip for Live Music

The Senegambia area has The Gambia’s most concentrated restaurant and nightlife scene. A short strip of bars, restaurants and live music venues. Find a kora performance — the 21-string West African instrument — and stay for as long as the music does.

Day 3 — Gambia River: Full Day Boat Excursion

Book this with CryptoFarer in advance. A full-day pirogue charter on the Gambia River is the centrepiece experience of any visit. Depart from Banjul’s main dock before 8am. Your guide will take you upstream through mangrove channels, past oyster fisherwomen, to midstream sandbanks where you can wade in the shallows. Watch for African fish eagles — they are here in extraordinary numbers — and keep your camera ready for giant kingfishers and the occasional hippo surfacing in upper-river sections.

Lunch is served on board: freshly grilled fish, attaya (strong, sweet green tea), and fruit. Return by late afternoon as the river turns gold in the setting sun. This is the single most memorable day of the trip for most visitors.

Book the River Pirogue Experience

Full-day or half-day river excursions, paid in crypto, guided by local experts.

Day 4 — Jufureh & Kunta Kinteh Island

This is the emotionally heaviest day of the week. Set aside the morning and early afternoon. Drive or boat north along the river to Jufureh, the village associated with Kunta Kinteh, the man whose story Alex Haley told in Roots. Take the short boat crossing to Kunta Kinteh Island — the UNESCO-listed former James Fort — and walk the ruins with a guide. The holding cells are small. The river view is vast. The weight of what happened here requires silence.

Visit the Roots Museum in Jufureh. Meet members of the Kinte family. This is not performance; it is genuine, living connection to a history that shaped the modern Atlantic world.

Evening: Sunset River Bar

Return south and end the day at a riverside bar with cold drinks and a sky that turns magenta and orange over the mangroves. Some days need a gentle ending.

Day 5 — Sport Fishing (Optional) or Beach Day

Option A: Sport Fishing Charter

Book a half-day sport fishing charter through CryptoFarer — payable in crypto. Depart from Banjul or Denton Bridge early morning. The waters off The Gambia’s coast are genuinely world-class for barracuda, bonefish, and African pompano. No experience required. Full tackle provided. Guide included. The fish you catch can be grilled for your lunch.

Option B: Southern Beaches — Sanyang & Kartong

Drive south to Sanyang Beach — a long, wild, almost entirely crowd-free Atlantic beach with a few simple fish restaurants. Continue to Kartong, the southernmost Gambian beach town, tucked against the Senegalese border. The river mouth here, where the Allahein River meets the ocean, is one of the most beautiful spots in the country.

Day 6 — Urban Banjul & Cultural Afternoon

Morning: Banjul City

Spend a proper morning in Banjul, the tiny, low-rise capital. Visit Albert Market — bolts of wax-print fabric, carved wood, leather goods, and the organised chaos of a functioning West African market. The National Museum of The Gambia has exhibits on the slave trade and local history that contextualise everything you’ve seen this week. Arch 22 — the monumental gate at Banjul’s main entrance — is worth visiting for the panoramic view from its roof.

Afternoon: Art Studios & Craft Village

The Gambia has a small but genuine contemporary art scene. Ask CryptoFarer to arrange a visit to a local artist’s studio — batik, painting, sculpture — where work can be purchased directly. The Craft Market near Bakau has high-quality woodcarving, calabash art, and jewellery.

Evening: Farewell Dinner

Your last real evening. Book a table at one of the coastal restaurants CryptoFarer recommends through CryptoEat, and order the full Gambian feast: domoda, benachin, grilled fresh fish, and tapalapa bread. The slow evening, the warm night, the Atlantic breeze — this is when most travellers decide they are coming back.

Day 7 — Departure

Most European and North American flights depart in the morning or early afternoon. Your CryptoFarer driver will take you to Banjul International — booked in advance, paid in crypto as everything this week has been. The 40-minute coastal drive gives you one last look at the Atlantic that started all of this.

In seven days, you have been on a river with fish eagles, touched a sacred crocodile, walked the grounds where ships once loaded human cargo, heard the kora played on the banks at sunset, eaten fish straight from the Atlantic, and done it all without once needing a bank. That is The Gambia. That is what CryptoFarer is building access to.
